It’s grazing season!
The cows are happily munching a lot of fresh green pasture these days, which is making for some very yellow milk and yogurt! I am getting a lot of comments at market about the color, and explaining to people that the great color comes from the beta-carotene in the fresh feed.
Speaking of market, we’re back to the CNY Regional Market on Saturdays! You can find us right about in the middle of C-shed. We had to take a break from it for the months of March and April, but we plan to be there weekly until November now.
Since we’re milking 10 now, and they’re all making lots of milk on the good fresh feed, we’ve also started bottling milk again. This is a limited edition product - it is available only at the Regional Market!
I made a new friend named Chrissy yesterday at market. We decided that we must have been separated at birth, because we’re fans of many of the same authors. We had a great conversation about local food, then I was lamenting the fact that the new book by Barbara Kingsolver (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle) is available only in hardcover. Chrissy suggested another book I might like, For the Time Being, by Annie Dillard. I had just finished writing this title down, when my new friend returned to my stall, and presented me with my own copy of both books!! She told me that if more people read these books, there would be more interest in farm products like ours. I asked her to put her name in the books so I could return them, but she refused, and instead charged me with passing them on when I am done with them. This was such a generous and inspiring act - thank you Chrissy! And for anyone out there interested in reading either book, please let me know!
